“You can’t think about yesterday. It’s not yesterday- it’s today”
-Athena (age 7)
When life beats you down to your very core and your soul cries for surrender, the Divine light will come shining over you and over your circumstances. Sometimes we don’t understand why we go through the pain to discover the light, but when we do, it’s like the light bulb goes off and you know that it had to happen in order for you to come out stronger, and make a comeback. One dark day I was broken, and couldn’t lift myself up, it was then when the light shined on us, and my blessed little 7 year old told me, “You can’t cry today, it’s not yesterday. You can’t think about yesterday; yesterday is not today.” What a profound way to comprehend that living in the present moment is all we need to do. Everything else will be figured out and the burdens don’t need to be carried anymore. How do I know this?
Because, I believe in miracles.
If you have faith in God, the Universe, or a Higher Power, you will know that life isn’t just a coincidence. Life and trauma happen to make you stronger and persevere into a better version of you. You can’t stay in the darkness for too long or your soul will suffer and never heal. The key is to find the love inside you and begin to heal. These 3 ways are just the beginning of the necessary healing ingredients for self-transformation and self-discovery.
If these 3 things helped me see the light, they can surely be the lamp to your feet as well.
1. The List
You need to make a list of everything you are grateful for, and all of the blessings you have received and want to receive. This list should be detailed and full of praise. It is thanking God, or the Universe for all of the good things in your life. Some call it a gratitude journal, but I call it my list of prayers that I’m thankful for. I write things that haven’t happened yet. I am thankful for the people who have hurt me, because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today- a transformed and better version of me. (Example List: Thank you, God, for my good health. Thank you for my home, my family, and my children and my children’s children. Thank you for your favor over my finances and my future. Thank you for guiding my steps so I make the right choices.)
2. Be Still
This is a hard one. Being still means to quiet your thoughts. Believing that your life will change. Believing that your circumstances will change for the better. Believing that your suffering and pain is meant to heal you and move you forward. Being still means letting go. You must let go and let God. The burdens aren’t yours to carry. Surrender that heavy baggage to, Him. If your mind cannot be still, then write your thoughts on a piece of paper. Write down everything that is troubling you. Fold it up, and put it in a prayer box or bury it in the earth. Once you let go of that paper, those worries are not meant to be carried by you anymore. You don’t need to think about how it’s going to work out- you just have faith that it will.
3. Worship Music
I remember the first time I started listening to worship music- I had this feeling inside me that touched my soul- this feeling was so warm and full of love. Some songs spoke right to my soul; some healed me; some gave me hope; some fought my battles. The darkness fears praise and worship music. When you blast that music and shout out to glorify God – the darkness will flee. Even when your heart is troubled, turn it on. When you’re happy and thankful for your blessings, turn it on and sing.
Life is a battlefield and these weapons will bring you into the light to lift your soul and spirit. We all need to be broken down in order to get to our raw core. The old layers have to peal off of us in order for us to see which path to take. Listen to the still positive voice; Praise God, and leave your worries to Him. Blast the worship music and you will see- Every struggle was meant for a purpose. You are a Victor and not a victim. The path is lit- follow the light.
