Self-Love
What it is, why we need it, and how to get it
Self-love is the belief you hold that you are a valuable and worthy person.
My journey to self-love has taken what feels like a lifetime. I’ve struggled with feelings of unworthiness, ugliness, shame and disappointment for most of my life. For me, I can trace my lack of self-love back to childhood neglect. I then found as I entered adulthood, I was well underway to developing an anxious attachment style in relationships. I continually attracted and unconsciously sought out emotionally unavailable men. After being raped in college, my self-esteem plummeted and I fell into a cycle of depression, an ongoing eating disorder and abusive relationships.
Common theme: I did not love myself and kept searching for someone to love me. What I didn’t know was that I needed to love myself first.
We need self-love in order to be truly happy.
We must believe that we are WORTHY of love and goodness in our lives before we can feel true happiness. When we love ourselves, we can finally show up for ourselves and live our best life. Attracting abundance into our lives- starts with self-love.
A lot of us do not know how to love ourselves. This may be due to childhood trauma, our needs not getting met as a child, or caregivers that suffered their own trauma and could not give us the love we desired.
